Sandy Town Bowling Club – Our Progress
Our progress over recent years has been very encouraging with a year-on-year increase in membership. We meet in the summer months on Tuesday afternoons 2pm – 4.30pm for a roll-up and friendly ‘spoons’ competition. Coaching is also available from one of our qualified coaches. In addition, we have a social get-together on Friday evenings from 6pm until dark, starting the evening with some fun bowling and followed by an optional fish and chips supper.
We also enjoy the competitive side of the game by taking part in National and County competitions, together with weekly games in the local leagues where we have a ladies team and three men’s teams. In addition, we play about 25 friendly matches against local clubs, mainly on a Thursday or Saturday afternoon. The details of all upcoming matches are displayed on the notice board in the Club’s shed and members’ availability to play is indicated by adding their names to the chart. The selected teams will normally be advised about one week prior to the match, and transport arrangements notified for ‘away’ matches.
In order to encourage new members to try our sport, we offer a reduced membership fee for the first season of just £15 (junior members under 18 and in full-time education £10).
Publicity is of prime importance to us, as we are able to reach out to the community with information as to what is happening at the Club. A splendid job is being done with the local magazines and press.
We now have an additional storage shed along the south edge of the green, and our keen gardeners keep the flowerbeds tidy and colourful.
Club competitions will be running throughout the summer under the control of Ray Swinnerton, culminating in a Finals Day on Sunday 16th September 2018.
This year’s Presentation Evening, where the winners receive their hard-won trophies, is scheduled for Saturday 17th November 2018 at Sandy Village Hall and the cost of £5 each for members and guests includes a hot meal and dessert.
Our Annual General Meeting will take place in Sandy Village Hall on Sunday 25th November 2018 at 3pm and all members are encouraged to attend.
Through the winter months, we move inside Sandy Village Hall on Tuesday afternoons (2.00pm-4.00pm) to play short-mat bowls. This is a new venture, which began in October 2017, having secured funding through Sport England for a National Lottery grant which enabled us to buy the mat and accessories, together with a quantity of woods in a selection of sizes. The only requirement of bowlers is to turn up with flat shoes, such as trainers. Visitors are welcome to join in, with only a small charge of £2 per week which includes a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit (or two!) – you do not have to be a member of the bowls club to attend this social event.
Finally, we could always do with more help, so if you have some spare time and would like to contribute to the layout of our facility, please ask – I am sure we can use your skills.
Have a good season, and enjoy your bowling.
